Recommended Primary Care Physicians

There are many meaningful ways to get involved with Impulse. Volunteers are the heart of Impulse Group. We could not provide many of the programs and services without involvement from generous volunteers.

1. One of the best ways to find a provider is to ask your friends or to use a community resource, such as Impulse Group, to help recommend or refer you.

2. Ask your doctor about his or her view of GLBTQ people and their relationships.

3. Ask your doctor if he or she has experience treating people like you. For example, if you are a gay male living with HIV, a lesbian, someone seeking PreP, gender questioning, etc., ask whether the doctor has experience with similar patients.

4. If you are sexually active (or plan to be), ask your doctor what standard sexually transmitted infection (STI) tests he or she recommends for your demographic. Impulse Group recommends providers discuss the tests below with their patients. Should your physician neglect to suggest any of these that are relevant to you (based on your sexual practices), it may be an indication that the physician does not have experience dealing with the sexual health needs of the GLBTQ population.

5. After your first visit, ask yourself: ?Did I feel comfortable being open with this provider? Did this provider take the time to address my questions and concerns?? Remember, the best outcomes come when you have a relationship with your doctor in which you feel safe sharing even sometimes embarrassing details. This ensures your provider can help develop the best treatment and prevention strategies for you.

*Recommended for those on PreP or HIV+ patients on specific certain antiretroviral therapies.
