Impulse India Hosts Night of Dancing, Advocacy & Education
Impulse India, the Asian branch of the international safer sex group Impulse that was launched in November, hosted a social gathering on March 21, 2014 at Hotel Sherwani in New Delhi. The event included an animated video on sexual health awareness, a dance competition, HIV testing, and the distribution of hundreds of free condoms and lubricant. Of the 66 people who attended the festive celebration, 28 took a free HIV test through which one person was found to be positive and was linked to treatment and care.
An additional component of the evening was a discussion about Section 377, the section of India’s penal code that outlaws homosexual sex. The section, which was drafted in 1861 and banned in 2009 after being ruled unconstitutional, was re-instated in December, drawing great outcry from the country’s vibrant LGBT community. Impulse India, with the support of the country’s first openly gay royal, Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil, has been an active voice in local protests to repeal Section 377.
